Join Us for the 10th Anniversary of Delray Reads Day!

It’s more important than ever to promote the importance of early literacy and providing access to high quality books.

For ten years, Delray Reads Day has sparked a community-wide movement around the importance of early literacy. We shall address the learning loss facing children across Delray Beach due to COVID-19 and the disproportioned impact the pandemic has had on underserved children. We are doubling down on our efforts to promote reading and to raise funds to provide a book for every child attending a Delray Beach Elementary School in pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade so when they transition back into school they have a new book waiting for them on their desk.

Celebrating the 16th Anniversary of Read for the Record®

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® brings together millions of adults and children around the world each year to read the same book on the same day in order to raise awareness about the critical importance of early literacy. Sharing high-quality picture books with young children is at the core of Jumpstart’s mission. Each year, Jumpstart selects a campaign book that fosters language and social-emotional development, honors the diversity in our world, has a strong narrative, and appeals to young children.

This year, Jumpstart is celebrating their 16th anniversary of Read for the Record® on Thursday, October 28, 2021, with the book Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon by Kat Zhang and illustrated by Charlene Chua. Click here for more information.

This year’s book selection, published by Candlewick Press, is Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon written by Kat Zhang and illustrated by Charlene Chua.

When Amy Wu’s teacher asks everyone to make their own dragon at craft time, Amy feels stuck. Her first dragon has a long, wingless body, stag-like horns, and eagle claws, but her friends don’t think it’s a real dragon. Then she makes dragons like theirs, but none of them feels quite right. None of them feels like hers.

After school, a story from Grandma sparks new inspiration, and Amy rounds up her family to help her. Together, can they make Amy’s perfect dragon?

The picture book, about a young girl who struggles during craft time to create a dragon that perfectly represents her, superbly captures themes of self-identity and affirmation through celebration of cultural symbols and family history. In children’s books, representation matters. That’s why Jumpstart emphasizes selecting high-quality books with characters that reflect the diversity of our world. Activity sheets for families, classrooms, and related events will soon become available.
