Keynote speaker for Delray Reads Day 2012
Director of Education, Houston Area Urban League, Texas
Executive Consultant, Scholastic Classroom and Community Group
As Director of Education for the Houston Area Urban League, John Robinson is responsible for the development and management of education strategy for all programs within the Education and Youth Development Department’s Urban League communities and schools.
Robinson oversees Houston’s award-winning National Urban League banner program, Project Ready Post-Secondary College Access. Using a three-component approach, the Project Ready curriculum is designed to increase the college access of students and increase the college-going rates of students from underserved communities and schools in Houston, Texas. Each year since 2003, 97% of high school seniors in Houston Area Urban League programs have graduated from high school and enrolled in colleges or universities across the U.S.
The Houston Area Urban League’s building blocks of success begin with Scholastic Read and Rise Family Conversations. Read and Rise is a comprehensive literacy solution that unites homes, schools and communities around the common goal of developing literacy skills in young children. Since 2003, twelve elementary schools in underserved communities of Houston begin a journey with Robinson and Read and Rise to engage and empower families as an essential part of their children’s literacy and their lifelong success.
Robinson has worked with and engaged more than 25,000 parents with Read and Rise and distributed more 120,000 Scholastic books to those families. Houston Independent School District (ISD) graduation rates are up and dropout rates are down. Houston ISD recognized Robinson and the Houston Area Urban League for this accomplishment in 2009 by inducting the agency into their Partnership Hall of Fame.
Robinson has been a national force in recognizing the important role families play in supporting their children’s early literacy and learning development at home. His work at the Houston Area Urban League has received the Brilliance Award in Education by the National Urban League and Legacy of Excellence in Education recognition by the PHILLIPCARES Foundation.
